We often think of ground mount solar in the form of large sprawling utility-scale solar farms. Miles of reflective glass across the landscape soak up the sun and generate energy for thousands of homes. But did you know? Ground mounts are effective for smaller arrays too. Ground mount solar is a great solution when you may have concerns about your roof. This could include imminent replacement, steep slopes, small roof plains that can’t accommodate enough panels, improper roof orientation (think north facing), large obstructions on the roof that may cast shade (dormers, chimneys, HVAC equipment), or even a challenging roofing material.
With a ground mount, you can soak up all the benefits of solar right in your yard without having to worry about roof penetrations or other concerns. Ground mounts work best in yards or properties that have wide open space with little shade from nearby vegetation or other buildings. They are a great option for farmers, agricultural producers, or large land owners with sunny space to spare. While ground mounts may be slightly more expensive than traditional rooftop solar due to additional equipment, sun exposure is maximized by placing the array at the exact right direction and angle. This can increase your electric savings over time. In addition, ground mount systems often function more efficiently due to increased air circulation beneath the panels.
